The NAP-GSP team, together with programme partners UNITAR and GWP, conducted a 10-day mission to support the NAP process in Niger.

The objectives of the mission were to undertake a stocktaking of relevant initiatives on climate mainstreaming, review institutional capacities, and suggest next steps to advance the NAP process in Niger.

A Stocktaking Report to present the institutional framework and stakeholders, identify key related initiatives as well as challenges and opportunities to advance the NAP process, and assesses skills related to the NAP in Niger, was drafted - see above.

The mission was requested by the Conseil National de l'Environnement pour un Développement Durable (CNEDD). More than 25 meetings with sector ministries, donor organisations, research institutions and international NGOs took place over the 10-day mission.

CNEDD, Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Finance, and other multi-sector groups were consulted, including sectors of transport, water, agricullture, environment, health, and education. Technical and financial partners consulted included UNDP country office, Care International, IRD, GWP-Niger and FAO. Meetings also took place with the French Embassy and the EU.

Previous NAP-related updates and activities
- The Government of Niger has nominated Dr. Kamayé Mââzou, UNFCCC Focal Point in Niger and Executive Secretary of the National Council on Environment for Sustainable Development Niger, as focal point for the NAP in Niger.
- Dr. Kamayé Mââzou was consulted at COP19 in a side meeting with the NAP-GSP team representatives Dr.Pradeep Kurukulasuriya (UNDP Bangkok) and Julie Teng (UNDP Niger) - focussing on on Niger's specific needs for NAP.
- A Terms of Reference for NAP-GSP support has been agreed with the Government.
- An initial mission to begin NAP-GSP support towards this is expected to take place by NAP-GSP and GWP in May 2014.

Three representatives from the Government of Niger Government attended the NAP-GSP / PAG-PNA Africa Regional Training Workshop (Francophone) in April 2014, During this event, a meeting was held with the NAP-GSP team to further discuss the organization of the NAP-GSP support mission and the mission ToRs.

The objectives for the mission are to conduct stocktaking for the NAP process, and to assess capacity needs and next steps for the NAP process. The mission team will be composed of UNDP, UNITAR and GWP personnel. The team will support Niger to assess institutional capacities and skills at macro, meso and micro levels, and to develop a NAP roadmap.
